For exteriors exposed to the elements, including decks, balconies, siding, trim, roof coverings or other outside applications, Biewer FRX® fire retardant treated (FRT) wood combines the beauty, flexibility and environmental advantages of wood with reliable fire protection.

Pressure- and chemically-treated to inhibit the spread of flames, FRX wood may be substituted for materials classified as non-combustible in certain building types. When exposed to flames, FRX wood creates a protective char coating that preserves the inside of the lumber for as long as possible, allowing more time for escape, reducing smoke and limiting damage.

FRT wood may be used where public safety is critical, where other materials would transfer heat or allow fires to spread, where sprinkler systems cannot easily be installed, in corrosive atmospheres that would degrade other materials, or where fire protection is inadequate. Long used in institutional buildings, FRT lumber is an increasingly popular choice for residential use as homeowners choose the security and safety of FRX wood. See below for typical exterior uses and typical residential uses.

Biewer FRX wood is consistently monitored to ensure that it meets the International Code Council's standard for proven fire protection performance.
